Your veins are the blood vessels that move blood from your feet and return it back to the heart. Veins depend on one-way valves to do this. When these valves open they are supposed to allow blood to flow up towards your heart. When these valves close they are supposed to prevent blood from flowing back down into your legs and feet. When these valves are damaged, blood flows back or "refluxes" down into your legs. This increases the pressure inside the veins as well as the pressure inside the leg itself. Over time this will cause: Pain, Cramping, Numbness, Restless legs, Skin color changes, and the development of unsightly veins. This disease may increase your risk of developing blood clots in your legs. This is what we call varicose vein disease.
Once the diagnosis is done, the treatment for varicose vein disease requires closure of the damaged vein. This is accomplished with thermal or heat energy. This is typically done with a specialized medical laser. First, we map out the diseased vein with ultrasound. Local anesthesia is provided. The diseased vein is accessed with a fine needle. We are then able to introduce the laser inside the vein. Once the laser is activated it closes the vein from the inside. The laser is then removed (nothing is left inside your body). This procedure is very safe and effective in the treatment of varicose vein disease. It is performed by highly trained and expert staff. All of these treatments are performed in the office. They are covered by most health insurance.
Atherosclerosis is a medical term for plaque buildup or "clogging" of your arteries. This tends to occur in older individuals. The main risk factors are: Diabetes, High Blood pressure, High Cholesterol, and Smoking (or Vaping). This plaque can form in any artery in your body. Symptoms and consequences of this plaque will depend on where the plaque build-up occurs. If you develop plaque in the arteries to your neck, it can lead to stroke. Plaque build-up in the arteries in your heart leads to a heart attack and heart disease. If you get plaque to the arteries in your legs this leads to PAD, or peripheral arterial disease.
PAD or peripheral arterial disease is a problem mainly of poor blood flow to the legs. initially symptoms may be mild cramping on the thighs or calves after walking some distance. Asd the problem gets worse, he pain is more intense and occurs after walking a lesser distance. In severe cases it can lead to ulcers, and even gangrene. This disease, if left untreated, may lead to amputations.

The Aorta is the main artery in your body. It starts right from the heart. It runs thru your chest distributes blood to your arms and brain, then courses down in to your abdomen. It is here that it is called the abdominal aorta. The abdominal aorta distributes blood to all the vital organs (liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, intestines...). the abdominal aorta, is the most common location for aortic aneurysms. What is an aneurysm? The aorta is supposed to be a uniform tube. If this tube gets dilated, we call it an aneurysm. If this dilatation gets large enough, it may rupture. A ruptured aortic aneurysm is an emergency. If untreated, this condition will lead to certain death.
We can treat your aortic aneurysm. Specially if it is detected early. You don't want to wait for it to rupture. There are 2 ways to treat your aneurysm. We can either do open repair or endovascular repair. With the open repair (LEFT) we make an incision thru the abdomen and repair the aneurysm directly, replacing the aorta with a graft. This is a BIG operation done in the hospital and requiring a lengthy recovery. We are experts in doing this kind of surgery. With the endovascular repair (RIGHT), we don't have to make any incisions in your abdomen. This is a minimally invasive procedure done with catheter access thru your femoral arteries in your groin. We advance stents into the aorta and repair the aneurysm from the inside. this is the more common way of treating this disease. We are the experts in doing this surgery as well.
Unfortunately kidney failure is a huge problem in our society. The main way to manage people with kidney failure is with dialysis. There two main ways to get "access" for dialysis. One is by placing a catheter in the main vein in the chest and then connecting the patient to the dialysis machine thru that catheter. These catheters are life saving, but are not meant to be the long term way to receive treatment. The best way to receive dialysis is with an arterial venous fistula or graft. This is a surgery usually done in your non dominant arm. We do this in the operating room. We surgically attach one of your veins to one of your arteries. This allows the vein to grow or "mature". Once this happens, the dialysis center will be able to access the fistula and provide the treatment. If your veins are small then we typically use a "graft" to do the fistula. We are the experts at doing this kind of surgery.
The Carotid arteries are the main blood supply to your brain. You have two of them, one on the right and one on the left side of your neck. The carotid arteries are a common location for the development of atherosclerotic plaque. When enough plaque accumulates this becomes an important cause for stroke. This is a very treatable problem when discovered early. The diagnosis is made with a simple ultrasound done in our office. Treatment could either be with open surgery or with a stent. We are experts in doing both.
Other diseases of the carotid arteries include Aneurysms, Carotid Body Tumors, Fibromuscular dysplasia. We are experts in diagnosing and treating these as well.
The most innovative way to treat Carotid artery disease is with the TCAR procedure. This is a specialized procedure that can only be done by a Vascular Surgeon. It minimizes the risk of stroke during surgery and provides excellent results. We are the experts in doing this procedure. Watch this short video to learn more.
Vascular ultrasound is the preferred initial test to diagnose arterial and venous problems. It is safe and non invasive. It does not require radiation. Ultrasound is highly sensitive in diagnosing vascular problems. For your convenience we have a fully staffed in office Vascular Ultrasound lab. We are experts in doing this kind of test.
Our staff is expertly trained to do diagnostic vascular ultrasounds for all conditions arterial and venous. We want to make sure that you and your loved ones feel safe and are well taken care of. We are the experts in vascular ultrasound.
Our office has an Invasive vascular catheterization lab. Here we are able to do procedures that in the past were only reserved to do in hospitals. We are fully accredited by the Florida Department of Health. Here we are able to do Arteriograms and Venograms. If you need an angioplasty or a stent, we are able to do this right in the comfort of the office. This allows for a less stressful procedure in a friendlier environment, and at a fraction of the cost of doing these in the hospital. Our staff is expertly trained in performing these procedures.
